It’s the legal floor, not a recommendation. Those numbers were never designed to reflect what a serious accident actually costs today: emergency room visits, surgery, rehabilitation, a totaled newer vehicle, or months of lost income for someone you hit.
A single ambulance ride and ER visit can approach $25,000 before treatment even really begins. If you’re found at fault in an accident that injures more than one person, $50,000 gets split between everyone hurt — nowhere near enough if there’s a serious injury involved. And $25,000 in property damage won’t come close to replacing a newer vehicle. Once your liability limits are exhausted, you are personally on the hook for the rest — your savings, your wages, even future income can be at risk.
On top of that, not every driver on the road is carrying even the minimum. If you’re hit by someone with no insurance, or not enough of it, your own policy needs uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to protect you — it doesn’t come standard just because you bought a policy.
