Personal Auto Insurance

Your car insurance exists for one moment — the one you hope never happens. Too many drivers find out at the worst possible time that the cheapest policy they could buy wasn’t actually enough. McBane Insurance builds personal auto coverage around what you’d actually need to be protected, not just what Ohio requires you to carry.

What Ohio Actually Requires

Ohio law requires drivers to carry at least 25/50/25 liability coverage — that’s $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage coverage. It’s the legal floor, not a recommendation. Those numbers were never designed to reflect what a serious accident actually costs today: emergency room visits, surgery, rehabilitation, a totaled newer vehicle, or months of lost income for someone you hit.

Where State-Minimum Policies Fall Short

A single ambulance ride and ER visit can approach $25,000 before treatment even really begins. If you’re found at fault in an accident that injures more than one person, $50,000 gets split between everyone hurt — nowhere near enough if there’s a serious injury involved. And $25,000 in property damage won’t come close to replacing a newer vehicle. Once your liability limits are exhausted, you are personally on the hook for the rest — your savings, your wages, even future income can be at risk.

On top of that, not every driver on the road is carrying even the minimum. If you’re hit by someone with no insurance, or not enough of it, your own policy needs uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage to protect you — it doesn’t come standard just because you bought a policy.

What a Properly Built Policy Includes

  • Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability — set at limits that actually match your risk and assets, not just the state floor.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage — protects you when the other driver doesn’t have enough insurance (or any).
  • Medical Payments / Personal Injury Protection — helps cover medical costs for you and your passengers regardless of fault.
  • Comprehensive & Collision — repairs or replaces your vehicle after an accident, theft, or weather event.
  • Rental Reimbursement & Roadside Assistance — keeps you moving while your vehicle is repaired.
  • Umbrella Coverage — an extra layer of liability protection for drivers with more assets to protect, sitting on top of your auto and home policies.

How We Build Your Policy

As an independent agency, we’re not limited to one insurance company’s rates or rules. We compare your situation across carriers we trust — including Westfield, Cincinnati Insurance, Auto-Owners, Grange, and Progressive — to find the coverage and price that actually make sense for your vehicles, your driving record, and your household. Then we sit down with you and explain what you’re buying, in plain language, so you know exactly what protection you have before you ever need to use it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ohio requires liability limits of at least 25/50/25 — $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage coverage.

For most drivers, no. Medical costs and vehicle repair/replacement costs have risen well beyond what those limits were designed to cover, which can leave you personally responsible for costs above your policy limits.

It protects you if you’re hit by a driver who has no insurance or not enough to cover your damages. It’s optional in Ohio but strongly recommended, since it’s the only coverage that protects you from other drivers’ choices.

It depends on your assets, your vehicles, and your household, but many of our clients carry limits well above the state minimum — often paired with an umbrella policy for additional protection. We’ll walk through the numbers with you.
